Energy Saving Transmissions Gear Up For Launch

The discussion over environmental issues has been full of talk about the latest hybrid and electric models, but people seem to be ignoring the latest development in transmissions that could do wonders for fuel economy.

The transmission is the link between the engine and the wheels of the car, known here in the UK as the gearbox. Engineers in the US however have been making discoveries that could result in vehicles having multi-speed gears in the style of mountain bikes.

Paul Lacy of consultant IHS Automotive said:

”Manufacturers are able to get efficiencies out of transmission that were unheard of.”

It is expected that within the next four or five years we will see vehicles with as many as nine gears replacing three or four speed automatics in the States.

Experts say the reason higher gears help fuel economy as it keeps the engine running at its ‘sweet spot’.

‘Dual-clutch transmissions’ are currently very popular over in mainland Europe and have replaced the CVT technologies that were originally touted to replace current technologies, consumers however were so to warm to the CVT arguing that they “feel and sound different”.

Replacement gearboxes are one of the most sought after parts say part finder services. Finder services such as CarSpareFinder have a network of breakers and dealers and will find the part that you need with a number of quotes when possible so you can choose based on price, location or even just personal preference.
